Specially manufactured, Tulsion® cation exchange resins in Hydrogen form as well as anion exchange resins in hydroxyl form can be used as catalysts. The former are used as catalyst for reactions that are normally catalysed by mineral acids, the latter are used for base catalyzed reactions. Catalysis by cation exchange resin is by far more common.
The advantages of using Tulsion® resin as catalysts as compared to homogeneous acid catalysts are as follows:
Ease of separation from reacting mixtures.Hence suitable for continuous reactions.
Not necessary to neutralize or concentrate the catalyst
Reusability of catalyst
Elimination of waste disposal problems
Low equipment costs as it can be used in mild steel reactors
Higher selectivity to the desired product and fewer by products
Higher rate of reaction and higher yields etc.
Examples of Tsion resin catalysed reactions are:
- Alkylation of phenols
- Esterification
- Acetalization or Ketalization
- Aldol condensation
- Alkylation of aromatic hydrocarbons
- Condensation
- Etherfication
- Hydration of olefins
- Knovenagel condensation
- Hydrolysis
- Polymerization and isomerization
- Tansesterification
